Some unpleasant markup arithmetic: Production function elasticities and their estimation from production data

نویسندگان

چکیده

The ratio estimator of the markup is output elasticity for a flexible input to that input’s cost share in total revenue. We highlight identification and estimation issues pertaining this estimator, when firm-level prices are not observed. If revenue used place elasticity, then profit maximization implies identically equal one, thus uninformative about markups. Concerning elasticities: with only data, also identified non-parametrically from production function, if firms have market power. Even separate price quantity it challenging estimate consistently there non-linear productivity dynamics face heterogeneous demand schedules, unobserved variation shifter.

Some unpleasant bargaining arithmetic?

It is commonly believed that, since unanimity rule safeguards the rights of each individual, it protects minorities from the possibility of expropriation, thus yielding more equitable outcomes than majority rule. We show that this is not necessarily the case in bargaining environments. We study a multilateral bargaining model à la Baron and Ferejohn (1989), where players are heterogeneous with ...

Production Function Estimation with Industry Capacity Data

This paper introduces a new data set for the analysis of productivity in U.S. manufacturing. It consists of data on production and input levels when the plants in an industry operate at capacity. The estimates are consistent with those obtained using data on actual operations from the ASM. As an application, I use this data to estimate the rate of growth of technological change that is embodied...

Understanding Policy in the Great Recession: Some Unpleasant Fiscal Arithmetic

I use the valuation equation of government debt to understand fiscal and monetary policy in and following the great recession of 2008-2009. I also examine policy alternatives to avoid deflation, and how fiscal pressures might lead to inflation. I conclude that the central bank may be almost powerless to avoid deflation or inflation; that an eventual fiscal inflation can come well before large d...

An integrated production-marketing planning model With Cubic production cost function and imperfect production process

The basic assumption in the traditional inventory model is that all outputs are perfect items. However, this assumption is too simplistic in the most real-life situations due to a natural phenomenon in a production process. From this it is deduced that the system produces non-perfects items which can be classified into four groups of perfect, imperfect, reworkable defective and non-reworkable d...
